Pay Dirt: Poll: One in Four Says Jesus May Return in 2007

Poll: One in Four Says Jesus May Return in 2007
By Adelle M. BanksReligion News Service

Twenty-five percent of Americans believe it is at least somewhat likely that Jesus Christ will return to Earth in 2007, a new poll from the Associated Press and AOL News shows.

The poll, conducted by the international polling firm Ipsos, looked at the public's predictions about what will occur in 2007.

Pollsters found that 11 percent of those surveyed said it is "very likely" that Jesus will return to Earth this year. An additional 14 percent said it was "somewhat likely."

Twenty-five percent of those polled said it was "not too likely,"
compared to 42 percent who said it was "not at all likely." Eight percent said they did not know or were not sure.

While a quarter of Americans polled said that it is at least somewhat likely that Jesus will return to Earth this year, views about the topic varied depending on religious persuasion, the AP reported.

For example, 46 percent of white evangelical Christians believe it's at least somewhat likely that Jesus will return this year, while 17 percent of Catholics and 10 percent of those with no religion feel the same way.

The poll, conducted Dec. 12-14, was based on telephone interviews with 1,000 adults from all states except Hawaii and Alaska.

When I was a teenager back in the 1970s, there were lots of Christians of a certain theological persuasion who were sure that Christ was returning any minute now. These were people who read books like Hal Lindsey's "Late Great Planet Earth", who said that the EU, which had 10 member countries at the time, was th 10-headed beast of Revelation. Whoops! Now the EU has 25 countries, and still Jesus hasn't returned.

Some things never change.

No offence to our American neighbours to the south but ...

sure are alot of them all f**ked up!

When I was a kid back in the early seventies, my church, pastor and family believed the return of JC was eminent. As in any moment, probably wouldn't get through the day, don't wait a second longer to repent!

In fact, the early christian church about 2000 years ago, also fervently preached the exact same thing according to history. I think it is high time humanity moved on!

Cheers

Who knows if Jesus will return or not (well, presumably he does:)), let alone when.

All people can have in these sorts of questions is opinions, beliefs..and I wouldnt want to rob people of their opinions..all of which, including the sceptic's, just cannot know for sure. So theres little room for argument really

I like to be sceptical in both directions..sceptical about conceptual religious assertions..and about the refutation of those assertions too.

Ultimately we dont know and it is surely a wonder that we expect to.

The more I live the more I sense just how bizarre and mysterious life and the univserse is. Little, however 'mad' in the eyes of reductionists, would surprise me. But I like to keep as down to earth as I can anyway.

The day Jesus returns is the day that I go to hell.
